Digital Forensics

The IT-Forensics or rather Digital Forensics is a branch of forensics. It deals with examinations of suspicious incidents relating to IT-systems and the determination of the facts and the perpetrator by recording, analyzing and evaluation digital traces. Finding and analyzing these traces is a technique for reconstructing how crimes are committed. Technological advances and the growing amount of data are confronting researcher with great challenges. ATHENE-Scientists refine the tools used by investigators to keep up with the rapid technological development. They are focusing on aspects such as data reduction on base of (fuzzy) hash functions, forensics of small mobile devices (smart phones, tablet PCs), and application forensics (e.g. of MS Word files, IM chatlog files like Skype or ICQ).
