Hugo-Geiger-Prize 2018
Award for CRISP-Scientists of Fraunhofer SIT
Dr. Siegfried Rasthofer, Fraunhofer SIT, is awarded the Hugo-Geiger-Prize in second place for his doctoral thesis “Improving Mobile-Malware Investigations with Static and Dynamic Code Analysis Techniques”.

In his doctoral thesis Siegfried Rasthofer takes a closer look at the analysis of android-software regarding harmful content: cyberattacks where hacker distribute malware are threatening the economy, authorities and citizens equally and repeatedly cause great damage. Especially risky: is the malware hidden inside software products, common anti-virus programs do not stand a chance to discover them. Until now app-store operators were struggling to identify veiled harmful apps automatically. In his dissertation Siegfried Rasthofer offers new approaches to identify and examine malware in apps. This is even possible when hacker cover up the malware. Within the doctoral thesis the licensable software „CodeInspect“ was developed, among other things, which is distributed by Fraunhofer SIT. Furthermore the results of the doctoral thesis offer a basis to carry out future security analysis of native binary code.
Since 1999 the Fraunhofer-Society and the Bayerischen Wirtschaftsministerium award outstanding, application-oriented doctoral thesis, which were written in close cooperation with a Fraunhofer Institute, with the Hugo-Geiger-Prize. The prize is named after the state secretary Hugo Geiger, patron of the founding meeting of the Fraunhofer-Society on the 26th, March, 1949. In total three prizes are awarded which are worth 5000, 3000 and 2000 Euro. The submitted papers are evaluated by a jury of representatives of research and development as well as the economy. Evaluating criteria are scientific quality, economic relevance, novelty and interdisciplinary approaches.
