ATHENE researchers are participating in a research project aimed at combating disinformation on video platforms
Video platforms like TikTok are widely used by young people and are therefore an attractive target for disinformation campaigns. These short videos spread extremely quickly, meaning that false or misleading information reaches a young audience, which is increasingly turning away from traditional news channels, in a matter of moments.

In the newly launched VAMPIR project - Video Use in Adolescence: Manipulation, Propaganda, Information, and Resilience - ATHENE researchers at Fraunhofer SIT are collaborating with an interdisciplinary team from the fields of communication studies, media psychology, and law to develop measures for detecting and curbing disinformation in videos.
The ATHENE researchers are analyzing how deepfakes and manipulated content spread from niche platforms like Telegram to mainstream services like TikTok, and are developing AI-supported methods for detecting deepfakes, manipulated videos, and images.
The goal of the project is to develop a comprehensive toolkit: technical detection methods will be made available to platform operators, while educational measures are aimed at schools and youth protection organizations, and legal recommendations will benefit policymakers.
