ATHENE researchers have developed a roadmap for the confidential diagnosis and treatment of mental illness

13/10/2025

Together with scientists from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi, ATHENE researchers have published a groundbreaking study in the renowned journal Nature Computational Science. The study shows how artificial intelligence can be used in the field of mental health without compromising patient privacy. The researchers have developed a systematic pipeline for the development of AI systems that can improve diagnostics and therapy while reliably protecting sensitive information.

Mental illness is one of the most common causes of health problems worldwide. However, there is a significant shortage of trained therapists. In the early stages of mental illness, when interventions are most effective, artificial intelligence has the potential to significantly improve diagnosis and treatment.

The proposed roadmap is based on various technical solutions, including anonymising voices and faces, generating synthetic data and training models in a privacy-oriented way.

This study was conducted by ATHENE researcher Prof. Iryna Gurevych and her colleague Aishik Mandal, in collaboration with Prof. Tanmoy Chakraborty from IIT Delhi.
