Clear the stage for the „Frankfurt Alliance“

17/09/2024

On Saturday, September 28, the first Science Festival Frankfurt will take place at Roßmarkt in Frankfurt. Science will come alive for young and old alike: on stage at science slams, debates, interactive shows, and short lectures, as well as in the science tents of the individual regional institutions. In the ATHENE tent, you can learn how to recognize and expose deep fakes. Children can try their hand at programming Sphero robots.

Below you will find the press release for the Frankfurt Science Festival on September 28, 2024:

At the Roßmarkt, the new science network invites you to marvel, ask questions, discuss, and participate in a science festival

FRANKFURT AM MAIN. In January 2024, 16 Frankfurt research institutions joined forces to form the “Frankfurt Alliance.” To highlight the strength and diversity of research in the science city of Frankfurt am Main and the Rhine-Main region and its importance for society in the heart of the Main metropolis, the alliance of non-university research institutes and Goethe University is hosting a major Science Festival, which will take place on Saturday, September 28, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Roßmarkt in downtown Frankfurt.

Science comes alive at this colorful family festival, with activities taking place in numerous tents and on a stage. The diverse program ranges from science slams and debates on current socio-political topics to hands-on activities, short lectures, and musical performances. Researchers from various departments at Goethe University and the research-intensive institutes of the Max Planck Society, the Leibniz Association, the Fraunhofer Society, the Helmholtz Association, the Paul Ehrlich Institute, and the German Consortium for Translational Cancer Research will provide insights into their research and be available for questions and discussions.

The event kicks off with a panel discussion on the topic of (educational) justice, with the participation of the Leibniz Institute for Educational Research and Educational Information. The discussion will focus on the connection between educational opportunities and social background, social mobility, and the importance of politics and research in decision-making processes. A big AI quiz in the form of a prompt battle, a talk, and comedy interludes by the two quirky “professors” Dr. KNOW and Dr. HOW are also on the program. Together with biologists and equipped with a magnifying glass, you can explore the Roßmarkt and discover what grows between the pavement joints and cracks in the walls. The event will conclude with a rap performance by Coodiny, alias Nikita Kudakov, and his live band. Nikita Kudakov has been making music since his youth and is now a doctoral student at the Max Planck Institute for Empirical Aesthetics, where he researches the interaction between rappers and their audience. The stage program will be moderated by Stephan Hübner from hr-Info, the festival's media partner.

At the same time, the institutions will be providing insights into their research activities in pagoda tents. To give a few examples: Using a walk-in model of the human heart, the Max Planck Institute for Heart and Lung Research and Goethe University will be presenting a key research project of the Cardiopulmonary Institute (CPI) cluster of excellence, which is dedicated to diseases of the cardiovascular system, in a joint tent. Right next door, things are blooming in color: The Goethe University tent features open studios for experimenting, painting, and puzzling, and humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences scholars will present their personal favorite topics in the series “The Heart of My Research.” In the Senckenberg Society for Nature Research tent, visitors can evaluate camera traps from Bolivia and South Africa on a journey around the world. The Leibniz Institute for Peace and Conflict Research is collecting Frankfurt ideas for peace. Under the title “Dive into the Cell,” the Max Planck Institute for Biophysics has VR glasses available that allow you to experience the building blocks of life from the inside. And a hands-on experiment by the GSI Helmholtz Center for Heavy Ion Research shows how nuclear fusion works.

The festival invites young and old alike to be curious, join in the discussion, ask questions, and learn more about science. Food trucks serving regional specialties will be on hand to cater to your culinary needs. Deck chairs and numerous seating areas invite you to take a break. The festival starts at 10 a.m. and ends at 7 p.m. Admission is free.

Sixteen institutions joined forces to form the Frankfurt Alliance at the beginning of 2024. The alliance includes institutes from the four major scientific organizations in the Frankfurt/Rhine-Main metropolitan region, a federal institution, and Goethe University. The Frankfurt Alliance aims to create synergies through networking and common framework conditions and to counteract the increasing segregation of work processes and research topics.

The following institutions are involved in the Frankfurt Alliance:_ DIPF | Leibniz Institute for Research and Information in Education, Leibniz Institute for Financial Research SAFE, Leibniz Institute for Peace and Conflict Research (PRIF), and Senckenberg Society for Nature Research (SGN) in the Leibniz Association; the GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research and the Frankfurt site of the German Consortium for Translational Cancer Research (DKTK); the Fraunhofer Institutes for Translational Medicine and Pharmacology ITMP and for Secure Information Technology SIT; the Max Planck Institutes for Biophysics (MPI-BP), Empirical Aesthetics (MPI-EA), Heart and Lung Research (MPI-HL), Brain Research (MPI-BR) and History of Law and Theory of Law (MPI-LHLT), as well as the Ernst Strüngmann Institute (ESI), which is associated with the Max Planck Society, the Paul Ehrlich Institute (PEI) as a federal institution, and Goethe University Frankfurt.
