18/07/2023

Professor Mira Mezini, the representative of TU Darmstadt on the ATHENE Board, has been awarded a LOEWE Top Professorship. The LOEWE research funding programme of the State of Hesse will provide approximately €1.9 million over five years to support her professorship. As part of the professorship, Prof. Mezini will focus on researching programming fundamentals for the development of reliable and trustworthy decentralised interactive learning software systems.

LOEWE top professorships are aimed at outstanding researchers with an international reputation. These professorships provide funding of between €1.5 million and €3 million over a period of five years.

Mira Mezini is one of three ATHENE researchers to hold a LOEWE professorship. Prof. Iryna Gurevych, from the Ubiquitous Knowledge Processing research group in the Department of Computer Science at TU Darmstadt, was the first person in Hesse to receive a LOEWE professorship in 2021. She contributes her research in automatic language processing and artificial intelligence to ATHENE's Automatic Vulnerability Scanning and Verification (AVSV), Security and Privacy in Artificial Intelligence (SENPAI) and Secure Digital Transformation in Healthcare (SeDiTraH) research areas, among others. In 2022, Haya Shulman, a professor in the Department of Computer Science and Mathematics at Johann Wolfgang Goethe University Frankfurt am Main, received another LOEWE professorship. She coordinates the ATHENE research area of Analytics-Based Cybersecurity and heads the Cybersecurity Analytics and Defences department at Fraunhofer SIT. She also represents Goethe University Frankfurt on the ATHENE board. In 2023, Mira Mezini, head of the Software Engineering Group in the Department of Computer Science at TU Darmstadt, will follow.
