New ePA security concept put to the test

11/10/2024

January 15, 2025, marks the launch of the new electronic patient record (ePA). The data stored in it must be particularly well secured, as some of it is highly sensitive health data. For this reason, gematik has developed a new security concept designed to ensure adequate protection. An ATHENE research team at Fraunhofer SIT has now reviewed the security concept and found it to be adequate.

Starting next year, the ePA will become part of standard medical care for everyone. This means that a digital file containing individual medical data will be automatically created for every patient in Germany. The aim is to simplify treatment documentation, therapy plans, medication prescriptions, and administrative processes and make them more transparent. To ensure the security of sensitive patient data in the ePA, gematik, which is responsible for the telematics infrastructure (TI), the central platform for digital applications in the German healthcare system, has developed a comprehensive protection concept. Researchers at Fraunhofer SIT have thoroughly examined this concept.

In order to do justice to the special features of the telematics infrastructure, the team also made technical and organizational improvement suggestions, which it recommends gematik implement. The report can be viewed online here:
