ATHENE / Fraunhofer SIT at Hannover Messe

April 20 – 24, 2026

Location: Hannover

Product piracy and cyberattacks on connected vehicles are among the most pressing challenges facing both industry and consumers. At this year's Hannover Messe, ATHENE researchers from Fraunhofer SIT are presenting two practical solutions that are specifically designed to counter these threats. Their projects SmartID and ELISA demonstrate how security research has a tangible economic and social impact.

SmartID tackles the annual losses caused by product piracy – around €8 billion in Germany alone and around €60 billion across Europe – with a patented technology that integrates a product’s unique surface properties directly into a QR code as a forgery-proof authenticity feature. Authentication is carried out using a standard smartphone without the need for specialist hardware and can be seamlessly integrated into existing production processes – at a processing speed of up to 1,200 products per minute.

The ELISA research project (Electromobility through Interoperable and Secure Architectures) simultaneously addresses the growing security risks associated with connected vehicles: based on the zero-trust principle and a vehicle-integrated key management system compliant with TPM 2.0 (ISO/IEC 11889), the architecture ensures that only authorised components and services communicate with one another. ELISA is being developed in collaboration with industry partners such as Infineon Technologies, Cariad and Hubject, and is funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy.

SmartID can be seen at the Fraunhofer joint stand (Hall 11, Stand 011), and ELISA at the Fraunhofer SIT stand (Hall 11, Stand D48).
